ippimail.com — "feel-good" email

December 4, 2006

I just discovered a new Webmail service this morning. No, it's not multi-gigabyte like Google or Yahoo!Mail. In fact, it says that I'm using 0 of 195.3MB. It apparently has the same filtering capabilities of other Webmail services, and goes with the traditional folders instead of GMail's labels. So what's so special about ippimail?

From their front page:

  • A free email service. It won't cost you a penny
  • ippimail raises money through selling banner advertising on the site.
  • 45% of the profits go to charity, 10% to the Open Source community.

A number of charities have signed up and await your support. As to the contribution to the Open Source Community, that's not clear yet, but then I haven't quite explored the site. Still, I use
Go to Ippimail

You should consider signing up as well. I like their terms and conditions and spam policy both for their clarity and their content. It's too early to tell how much of a spam magnet my ippimail address will be, but they guarantee that if you do get spam, they had nothing to do with giving out your address.

Daniel,

Thanks for the ippimail mention! :-) Nice to see some open source fans helping us along.

Hope you’ll become more involved with the project in time.

Hi Simon. ‘Twas my pleasure, sir. Just gimme a holler, and I’ll do what I can to help.

Daniel,

If you’re serious about chipping in, drop me a line at webmaster [at] ippimail.com with a rundown of your skills.

There’s about a gazillion things we need help with! ;-)

Thanks mate!

Hi Simon. Sure, I’ll compose and send a message later, as I have to leave in a few minutes. Also, I’ve “approved” your comment so others who may be interested and available may pitch in as well.

Regards.

Daniel,

Any volunteers are most welcome!

There is a ‘Developer’s corner’ in our forums which outlines the technologies we are using currently. Basically ‘LAMP’ but we do want to employ more AJAX’y things … ;-)

Just registered. I like it. Still, my favorite old email domain was @putanginamo.com. That was classic.

Hi Simon. OK, will look at the developer’s corner, but I haven’t coded in over 20 years. Still, I’ll look for something to do :)

BTW, I think one of your the questions when I signed up asked where I learned of ippimail. I didn’t remember then, but now that I think of it, it might’ve been an article by Tony Mobily at Free Software Magazine.

Also, sorry for taking so long to approve your comment. i.ph may have sent me a notice but it might’ve gotten lost in my inbox when we were having Internet access problems due to that Taiwan earthquake >:(

Regards.

Thanks for the kind words. I should really update this blog more often.

As to ippimail (the subject of this post), alas, they’re gone, and with them the feel-good email model.
